Kale Chips: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly April 18, 2008

Since reading about the kale chips on Kath Eats Real Food, I’ve been itching to try them. Unfortunately my little Sprouts Market only had 1 small bunch of kale (and I had to really dig to find it). Well, I finally got around to making the chips last night. They were really good! Per Kath’s recipe, I topped the raw leaves with a little olive oil, but instead of adding salt or cheese I sprayed on a few squirts of Bragg’s Liquid Aminos. That added a nice soy-saucy (Yeah, that’s a word) flavor to it. Mine took a little longer to get crispy as well– some were still a bit chewy after around 20 minutes. But still really good!

Here’s how they looked… I only wish I had been able to make more!

The brown super crispy ones were the best :)

Now for the bad part…

I’ve never had a salad spinner. I thought it would be one of those things that just took up a bunch of room in our (limited) cabinet space. But soggy lettuce sucks, so after receiving a Macy’s gift card I decided to splurge on this bad boy from the Martha Stewart Collection:

Looks okay, right? It matched our kitchen and was reasonably priced. All good.

Too bad it doesn’t work AT ALL. I chopped my kale, rinsed it in the cute little blue basket, popped it in the spinner and pulled the cord. Nothing. No spinning; not even a halfhearted twirl. The product had a bad review on the Macy’s website and I should have heeded the warning. Lesson learned.

Martha: you have failed me.

So I guess I’ll be returning that this weekend and finding a salad spinner elsewhere. Any suggestions?

Haha, what do you expect from an ex-con? Although sometimes you can’t go wrong with her recipes, they are quite delicious. Those kale chips sound interesting at the very least. Is it sorta like eating super crispy lettuce? Maybe something like dried seaweed?

    Ha! Good point…

The taste is kind of along the lines of a Pringle, maybe? It’s hard to describe. More crispy-crunch than substance.

I don’t think I’ve ever had dried seaweed- just seaweed salad and whatever they use to wrap sushi rolls. I’ll have to try it!

Sorry to hear about your salad spinner.

Walmart has a cheap version for under $3…I think? I can’t remember the exact price. It’s cheap, regardless. I had one for a couple years before the crank broke.

Or a good salad spinner runs something like $25 at kitchen stores. One of my splurges for the new apartment was an OXO one and it works great.
